Panels proclaim Rising in six languages

Irish Independent

DRAMATIST and cultural commentator Gerald Mannix Flynn has personally funded the building of an installation depicting the 1916 Proclamation in six different languages to mark the 90th anniversary of the Easter Rising.

The project, outside the Sugar Club on Leeson Street, Dublin, can be seen by passing motorists and pedestrians and includes versions of the proclamation in English, Irish, Polish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic on durable aluminium panels.

Mr Flynn had to get planning permission to erect the installation, which will remain in place for a year.

The work includes the names of the seven signatories to the proclamation, all of whom were executed: in Kilmainham gaol: in May within two weeks of each other Thomas J Clarke, Sean MacDiarmada, PH Pearse, James Connolly, Thomas MacDonagh, Eamonn Ceannt and Joseph Plunkett.

The artwork aims to attract interest to the fact that Ireland is now a multi ethnic country proud of its history.
