UCC event to mark 1916 Rising

PRESIDENT Mary McAleese will attend a major conference in Cork at the weekend to mark the 90th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

The two-day University College Cork-organised conference, entitled The Long Revolution: The 1916 Rising in Context, will feature a range of leading national and international speakers exploring this crucial event in the history of modern Ireland.

Experts in academia, politics, the military and the law will analyse the political, social, economic and cultural background to, and the events and legacy of the Rising.

Mrs McAleese will be among the main speakers on Friday night, the opening night of the conference. She will be joined by Professor Keith Jeffery of Queen’s University Belfast.

Hon Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman of the Supreme Court, Dr Jérôme van de Wiel of the University of Rheims, Dr Rosemary Cullen-Owens of University College Dublin, Dr Brian P Murphy OSB of Glenstal Abbey, Dr Owen Magee of UCD and Brendan O’Shea and Gerry White of Collins Barracks, Cork, are among the speakers lined up on Saturday.

The conference is being organised by Prof Dermot Keogh and Gabriel Doherty of UCC’s History Department.

A limited number of tickets are available (€15, with concessions €5).
