SF election worker admits being paid Special Branch agent

19/01/2006 - 13:31:23

A Sinn Féin election worker in Co Fermanagh has admitted being a paid police agent for more than 20 years.

In a statement issued through his solicitor today, Lisnaskea man Sean Lavelle said he had been pressurised into becoming a Special Branch informer after being arrested in 1980.

He said he deeply regretted his decision and the hurt he had caused to his friends and family.

Sinn Féin has played down the significance of the news, saying Mr. Lavelle had not been a party member and simply worked on election campaigns.

However, it added that such revelations were not helpful in building the confidence that all sides need to get the peace process back on track.
