PSNI 50-50 recruitment 'must end'

BBC

An Ulster Unionist peer has introduced a bill in the House of Lords calling for the end of 50-50 recruitment to the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The Patten Report recommended the 50-50 policy in the Good Friday Agreement. It means half of all new recruits to the PSNI must be Catholic.

However, Lord Laird said he believed selection to the police should be based on merit.

"If he or she is qualified for the job, he or she should get it," he said.
