Bomb alert at top security jail

BBC

An alert at the jail last month caused disruption

A suspect device has been found inside Maghaberry prison near Lisburn in County Antrim.

The alert began just before 1700 GMT on Monday and Army technical officers are at the top security jail.

The Prison Service said prisoners had not been moved, but the situation would be kept under review. An alert at the jail last month caused huge disruption.

Staff were unable to get to work and visits were cancelled. However, nothing was found after a widespread search.

At that time, a Belfast newsroom was given a warning that there was a device in a bag of grit.

An Army bomb disposal team and prison officers with sniffer dogs carried out that search.
